English talent Redmond, 22, signed for Southampton in a £10million deal this summer after his former club Norwich were relegated to the Championship.
Redmond only scored six goals in thirty-seven appearances from a wide position in the top-flight last season but Puel believes the best is yet to come.
Nathan Redmond has been told by Claude Puel to follow the development of Thierry Henry
The 22-year-old was used in a front two for England at the Toulon tournament and impressed
Puel worked with Henry while he was a coach at Monaco in the 1990’s and ahead of the start of the Premier League kick-off on Saturday, the Frenchman drew similarities between the pair.
In his early days, Arsenal legend Henry was a flying left winger before polishing his game as a forward whose trademark was to cut in from the flank and curl shots into the far corner of the goal.
In Philippe Auclair’s biography of Thierry Henry, he recounts how the new Saints’ coach perfected the Frenchman’s finishing technique at Monaco.
Henry started as a winger before transforming into one of the world’s most prolific strikers
‘Puel made a teenage Henry rehearse the same sequence until he was sick to the stomach.
Run at full speed. Receive the ball. Cut inside, past a line of cones. Then do it again, and again, until that piece of skill had become as instinctive as walking.’
Speaking on Thursday, Puel said: ‘Nathan has the ability to shoot with his right foot and curl the ball beautifully.
He has this particular skill. They are two players where I see similarities in their speed and technical ability.
I see Redmond here as having the qualities of a striker. He can shoot, dribble and make exciting things happen. He’s been a good surprise for me.
It seems a pity or a waste to leave him on the right. He can play up front.
Puel believes that Redmond has all of the core attributes to progress as a centre forward
‘He’s also mentally sharp, he has a good feel and reading of the game.
His approach play and link-up with his team-mates are sharp and he has impressed. In France, we call Thierry ‘Titi’.
I hope I am able to speak with him over the next few weeks. He has a huge passion for football and he loves watching games.’
Puel has lost significant firepower following the departures of Sadio Mane to Liverpool and Graziano Pelle to the Chinese Super League but believes his squad can cope.
Southampton have lost considerable attacking threats in Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle
‘We have Dusan Tadic, Shane Long, Charlie Austin, Nathan Redmond and more young players you will see.
We want to develop and improve.’
He also insists that captain and Portuguese Euro 2016 winner Jose Fonte will not leave the club this summer, despite being linked with Manchester United and Everton.
‘For Southampton, it’s important for Jose to stay.
He’s a good player. I don’t think there’s a possibility for Jose to leave us and he’s very important for the team. When I see him on the training ground, he is concentrated and a good professional.’
